Herbal Butter Board with Spiced Honey

If you’ve spent any time on the internet lately, you’ve probably come across a butter board.

I remember years ago seeing a photo Sunset Magazine took on Pinterest of a stone plate with a layer of butter spread on top, sprinkled with bright edible flowers. It was so simple but eye-catching.

With the butter board having its moment, I wanted to see what all the hype was about. If you know me, you know I love butter. It’s a key ingredient in a lot of my cooking and I’m a big fan of making my own ghee or, clarified butter.

For this quick and easy appetizer, you can go sweet or savory. I personally really enjoy a salted honey butter moment and decided to use a spiced honey I already had on hand.

Spiced honey is super simple to make. It’s essentially an herbal-infused honey with ground spices that you mix into a thin paste. To make it even more medicinal, you can also add in your favorite powdered adaptogens or medicinal mushrooms.

It’s one of my favorite herbal prep pantry staples and one I especially love to use this time of year. The warming and digestive-supportive spices combined with the sweet and grounding properties of honey make it so comforting for cool days.

You might be thinking, “what do you do with the spiced honey?” While you might just want to eat it straight from a spoon, you can also add a spoonful to a mug of hot water to make an instant tea. Add your favorite frothed milk for an extra cozy drink.

Drizzle it over roasted squash or carrots, creamy root-based soups, simply slather it on toast with butter or use it like you would plain honey. As for the butter board, think of it as a canvas for your favorite flavors. I just used what I had on hand like fresh basil, dried rose petals, marigold petals, nice flake salt, black pepper, and spiced honey.

The key here is to use soft room-temperature butter, so it’s easy to spread out. Serve it with warm bread and you’ve got a really delicious quick appetizer to serve the next time you host dinner.
